On the afternoon of September 19th local time, the "Gala Performance of Chinese Rod Puppetry Excellence," presented by the Yangzhou Puppet Research Institute (Jiangsu Provincial Puppet Troupe), was staged to great acclaim at the Sergey Obraztsov State Academic Central Puppet Theatre in Moscow. The performance captivated the entire audience with its exquisite intangible cultural heritage skills and profound cultural depth, earning a warm atmosphere and continuous applause.
As a key performance unit of the 13th International Puppet Theatre Festival, this show featured a collection of 12 classic rod puppet acts. Pieces such as the auspicious and celebratory Wishing You Good Fortune, the poetic Moonlit River in Spring, and the graceful and delicate Scroll of Beauties imbued the puppets with vivid vitality through nuanced emotions and masterful manipulation techniques. They successfully transcended language barriers, forging a profound emotional connection with the audience. Acts like The Drunken Concubine, Puppet Face-Changing, The Happy Little Novice, and Soaring to the Moon were particularly acclaimed, frequently eliciting cheers of "Bravo!". Traditional Chinese art radiated dazzling splendor on the international stage and received the "Special Performance Award" at the festival.
During the event, a Yangzhou city promotional video vividly showcased the cultural heritage and poetic charm of this ancient city with millennia of history. Tourism brochures placed at the venue also attracted many audience members to stop and browse, quietly sowing seeds of longing and anticipation for Yangzhou.
In a heartwarming gesture, the Yangzhou Puppet Research Institute presented the theatre with plush rod puppet cultural and creative gifts themed on the children's play Hehe... Journey to the West, symbolizing that the cultural exchange between China and Russia will be as determined and enduring as the legendary pilgrimage to the West. After the performance, some audience members received Yangzhou lacquerware pendants as souvenirs, each gift carrying the deep affection of the people of Yangzhou.
A representative from the Yangzhou Puppet Research Institute expressed after the performance, "We are greatly honored to represent Chinese puppet art in Moscow and share the charm of this millennia-old intangible cultural heritage with Russian audiences. Both China and Russia are countries with deep cultural roots. We hope to use puppetry, an international artistic language, to further promote understanding and friendship between our peoples."
This performance was not only an artistic display but also an in-depth dialogue between civilizations. Seizing the opportunity, our side held talks with representatives from puppet troupes in places like Paris and Novosibirsk, actively exploring possibilities for future participation in local art festivals and continuously expanding the international exchange channels for China's intangible cultural heritage art.
"Leave for Yangzhou in spring green and gay," a line of classic poetry, captures the timeless allure of the city. The Yangzhou Puppet Research Institute sincerely invites friends from Russia and beyond to visit China and Yangzhou, to personally experience the charm of the millennium-old canal culture and feel the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region.
In the future, the Yangzhou Puppet Research Institute will continue to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, promote Chinese intangible cultural heritage art globally, and help more people understand China and fall in love with Yangzhou through the vibrant art of rod puppetry.
