In 2014, UNIMA China, in cooperation with China Puppetry and Shadow Art Association and UNIMA Asia-Pacific Commission, and supported by Chinese Government at various levels, has organized a series of activities on the inheritance and development of puppetry and shadow art and the cultivation of talents.

At the beginning of the year in Changsha, the conference on work arrangements was held to exchange experience and discuss plan and goals.

22 puppet plays (shows) and 13 shadow puppet plays (shows) were enrolled in the Funding Support Project of Ministry of Culture of China for Excellent Puppet and Shadow Plays (Shows).

6 puppet and shadow puppet projects were enrolled in the first batch of National Artistic Funding Supported Project of China.

On March 21st, the World Puppetry Day, in the name of three entities, with the uniform Logo, all the member entities were organized to hold “World Puppetry Day” Non-profit Exhibition and Performance in their local area.

In line with the “National Cultural Heritage Day” of China Government, all member entities were summoned to hold various theme activities in their local areas, such as exhibition and performance, training, inheritance and practice, etc.

Promoted the establishment of “Jinjiang Puppetry Art Spreading and Exchanging Center” in Hong Kong.

Three colleagues went to Cuba to attend the UNIMA Congress and Matanzas International Puppetry Festival, and reported to the participant representatives the preparation status of the upcoming First Asia-Pacific Puppetry Festival in Nanchong City of Sichuan during June 1st to 6th 2014 and the development of Puppetry in China.

Approved by China Ministry of Culture, from June 1st to June 6th in Nanchong City, the “1st China (Nanchong) International Puppetry Art Week” was hosted and organized by UNIMA Asia-Pacific Commission, UNIMA China and China Puppetry and Shadow Art Association. About 700 artists of 47 professional theatres and folk troupes from over 20 countries and regions participated in the Art Week, and over 60 officials and guests presented. More than 500 thousand audiences watched over 120 performances. During this event, there were opening ceremony, closing ceremony, exchanging competitions, Carnival, puppetry and shadow performances, artistic salon, academic seminar, promotion activity for world, etc. Through their vivid performances, oriental and western artists expounded the theme of this event – “One Art, One Dream”. About 50 News media have given special reports for the event.

Associated with Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and held the “2014 China (Hunan) Beining Intangible Cultural Heritage and Puppetry and Shadow Art Exchange and Exhibition” in Changsha City. Various artistic performances and seminars were held around the theme – Pass on the Cultural Heritage, Grace the Beautiful China.

Jointly hosted the “Gold Lion” - 5th National Puppetry and Shadow Technique and Skill Competition of Young and Mid-aged People.17 theatres and 44 shows participated. During this competition, many new talents and works emerged.

 “China Puppetry and Shadow Artistic Talent Training Base” wasestablished in Shanghai Theatre Academy. In 7 years’ time, it has cultivated 200 talents with bachelor degree in puppetry and shadow art major. Now the cooperation agreement has been renewed, and the preparation for the integration of vocational and undergraduate education of puppetry has been started.

Associated with UNIMA Professional Training Commission and Shanghai Theatre Academy, “One Master, One Style” Excellent Young Puppeteers Overseas Internship & Performance Program was presented. Since 2014, puppetry, a new major, has been put into trial in senior students in Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Associated with the Cultural Bureau of Shanghai City, the “4th Shanghai International Puppetry Festival & 2nd International Puppetry Artistic Seminar” was jointly held in Shanghai. Troupes from 13 countries have performed and attended in the Artistic Forum.

Associated with the Cultural Bureau of Yangzhou city, the “1st China (Yangzhou) International Puppetry Artistic Seminar” was held in Yangzhou. Tito Lorefice, the President of UNIMA Professional Training Commission and UNIMA Argentina, and several Chinese puppetry specialists attended the seminar and gave specific speeches.

Jinjiang Hand Puppet Art Protection and Inheritance Center, Jiangxi Puppetry Troupe and Haining Shadow Puppet Troupe were organized to attend the Iran International Puppetry Festival. More than 30 troupes from the region of China have given exchange performances in regions of Europe, Asia, America and Africa.
