Quanzhou Marionette Troupe

Quanzhou Marionette Troupe, was called the Suspended String Puppet in ancient times, originated from the Qin and Han Dynasty and has been inherited and flourishing till now. One of Chinese Puppetry has the richest cultural foundation and artistic accumulation. It reserved over 700 traditional plays and its unique play music “Puppetry Tone” that comprises over 300 singing tunes. With its whole set of consummate and standard manipulating skills, distinctive puppetry head carving, figure design and craftsmanship, Quanzhou Marionette is the undisputed representative of Chinese marionette art.

As the main inheritor of Quanzhou Marionette, Quanzhou Puppet troupe was founded in 1952. Since then, it has directed and performed a number of plays and shows, and it performed throughout the mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as more than 60 countries and regions in the Five Continents. Its representative works include “The Flooding of Jinshan Temple”, “Mountain of Flames”, “Saving Mother by Cleaving through the Mountain”, “The Imperial Envoy”, “The Orphan of the Chao Family”, as well as small plays like “Monkey Training”, “Drunken Zhong Kui”, “Youth Dream”, “Lion Dance”, “Happy Lantern Festival”, etc. These excellent plays have won numerous national and international awards, Golden awards and single awards of scenarist, directing, design, stage design, stage light and performance, etc. on national competitions and International Festivals in various countries. Its well-known puppetry master Mr. Huang Yique was granted the “Special Honorary Award” by the Chinese Ministry of Culture.

The Quanzhou Marionette show on the Opening Ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games presented the unique features of Chinese marionette to the world. Therefore, Quanzhou Marionette was invited to perform on the open ceremony of “Ancient Paths, Modern Voices” bicoastal celebration of Chinese culture at the grand world famous art palace, Carnegie Hall. Quanzhou puppet troupe was granted as the “Puppetry Art Demonstrative Base of the United Nations South-South Cooperation Network” by the Demonstrative Base of United Nations South-South Cooperation Network, the “Experimental Base of Art Exchange” by UNIMA China and China Puppetry and Shadow Art Association. It also has been inscribed on the first batch of “National Intangible Culture Protection List” and the UNESCO “Best Practices of Safeguarding Intangible Culture”.
