Harbin Children Shadow Puppet Troupe is one of the “three national shadow puppet troupes”, and the representative of the unique shadow puppetry type of Heilongjiang Province or even northeast of China.
Harbin Shadow Puppetry, with a long history, has been existed for 200 years. The unique tune and instruments playing of “Longjiang Shadow Puppetry” formed a very special art school. The famous music of Longjiang Shadow Puppetry with warbling sound and elegancy has strong local color. This special music is naturally chorused by several string instruments with local characteristics and style. Referring to the modeling, the biggest characteristics of Longjiang Shadow Puppetry which are distinguished from other shadow puppetry in northeast of China are the carving method of figures’ faces is different and the feet of female figures are not the little triangle but the feet wearing shoes which used in dramas.
As in the new era, Longjiang Shadow Puppetry makes some reforms and innovations based on the inheritance of tradition, creating a lot of puppet performances with modern theme. Furthermore, brings new technology elements in making figures and props, improves the manipulation methods, and creates several special luminous devises for shadow puppetry, such as cloud lights, rain lights, flash lights, project lights and revolving lights. These lay an important basis for the development of shadow puppetry, and play a very positive role.
The forth generation of Harbin Children Shadow Puppet Troupe, National Class-A actress, the director of the troupe Gao Shufang had been to Germany as the member of Chinese experts group, helping, classifying and identifying more than 3,000 shadow puppets. Thus, she became the most influential representative and leader of Chinese Shadow Puppetry at that time.
The troupe gave special performance to central leaders in Huairen Hall of Zhongnanhai, receiving high praises from central leaders. And it was welcomed in Japan, Europe and Asia during cultural communications and business performances.
In recent years, the troupe attended numerous shadow puppetry competitions in national, provincial and local levels. A large number of performances and performers awarded “Best Performance”, “Outstanding Performer” and so on. Longjiang Shadow Puppetry is listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage safeguarding projects at the present.
