Chengdu Puppet and Shadow Show Troupe was founded in 1957. The troupe, as one of the most important national troupes in southwest of China, was consisted by several traditional private marionette and shadow puppet troupes. The troupe has a big variety of plays including rod puppets, shadow puppets and hand puppets. The rod puppets in Chengdu can be divided into three kinds based on its small, middle and big bodies: the big one, as the feature of Sichuan area, it is usually over 160cm; while the middle one is approximately 90 to 100cm high; the small one, also named “Fine puppets or Fine Elbow”, is about 40cm high. During its long period of artistic practice, Chengdu Puppet and Shadow Show Troupe skillfully combined the art of singing and performance in local opera with puppet and shadow plays and accumulated a number of flourishing and excellent plays and shows, like “The Monkey King Thrice Borrows the Palm-leaf Fan”, “Chen Xiang Saving his Mother”, “Ne Zha”, “Red Earth, Blue Earth”, “The Maze Executing Immortals”, “Apsaras”, “The Wonderful World” and the new creative performance inspired from the archeological discovery of Sanxingdui and Jinsha relic, “The Mystery of Sanxing and Jinsha Sites”. Various in presentation on stage and rich in artistic means, these plays and shows gained high artistic and appreciative value. The famous master puppeteer of Sichuan puppets, Mr. Li Zhengfa, successfully brought the consummate skills in Sichuan Opera into puppet and shadow play, like “Face Changing”, “Spiting Fire”, “Picking and wearing flower”, “Spinning handkerchief”, “Throwing and catching handkerchief”, “Water hair technique”, “Drawing out the feather tail”, etc. which developed into the unique performing style of Sichuan puppetry. Among these plays and shows, some have not only received national awards, but also been invited to giving performances in more 30 countries and areas in Europe, Asia, Africa and America and been highly prized by professionals and audiences as the “authentic and standard perfect theatre art”. Chengdu Puppet and Shadow Show Troupe is one of the founding troupes of UNIMA China.
