Founded in September, 2009, Shanxi Folk Art Troupe Co., Ltd. was restructured based on the Shanxi Folk Art Troupe founded in 1953. With over 60 players and staffs, the troupe is the only provincial professional performance group for puppet and shadow shows in the northwest of China, the important education bases for juveniles and important intangible cultural safeguarding unit in Shaanxi province.
During about 60 years, the troupe has created and performed over 100 large and middle performances. The most famous performances include “The Monkey King Thrice Borrows the Palm-leaf Fan”, “The Monkey King Thrice Beats the Whitt Bone Demon”, “Nezha Conquers the Dragon King”, “The Goddess Chang’s Fly to the Moon”, “Snow White”, “Legend of Mount Zhongnan” and “Frog Prince”. Small excellent plays include “Regretted Road”, “Moonlight”, “Buddhist Pearl Handkerchief”, “Walking Snow”, “Carry Burden”, “Praise for Pear Flower”, “Zhongkui Finds Patch”, “Play with Demon”, and “The Broken Bridge”. These performances have won national prizes and provincial prizes and been invited to visit more than 30 countries and areas including Thailand, Switzerland, German, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Brazil, Iran, Singapore, Japan, Malta, Serbia, America, India, Mauritius, Mexico, Hong Kong of China, and Taiwan, and gained the consistent favorable comment. It is worth mentioning that the troupe was highly prized when participated in the performance activity to celebrate the return of Hong Kong, went to Lausanne of Switzerland to salute contributors for Olympic bid, and joined the torch relay of Olympic and gave performance in Australia
In recent ten years, the troupe extended its thought and developed a new approach by creative innovation in performing form. In 2005, the troupe produced and performed the puppet and shadow play, Three Legends from China, jointly with American Kennedy Center, participated in Chinese Culture Festival held in Washington of America, and in 2012, it participated in the 21st UNIMA Congress and World Puppetry Festival in Chengdu and won international award.
