Founded on June 1st, 1960, Shanghai Puppet Troupe aims to serve children. Now it has most complete professional personnel including screenwriters, directors, players, design personnel, composers, theatre art designers, and puppet scene painting staffs in China, and has its own puppet theatre.
Shanghai Puppet Troupe specializes in the performance of rod puppet, and also takes into account performance forms including shadow puppets, hand puppets, and joint performance of human and puppet. During the period of over 50 years after its foundation, the troupe has put over 180 repertoires of different themes and various forms on the stage. The troupe pursues the all inclusive and all-embracing cultural spirit, and creates unique Shanghai Style.
In order to express the drama better on the stage, Shanghai-style puppet is good at relocating performance idea of puppet. As a result, the troupe creates performance scope that is expert in rod puppet, and pioneers the application of performance puppets including acrobat puppet, horizontal-controlled puppet, and cloth-iron rod puppet. With the application of isolating light in the stage, the performance forms of puppet stage has new breakthrough. Meanwhile, the Shanghai-style puppet stage pays more attention to the comprehensive integration and harmonization of stage art, lights, music and performance art. Furthermore, the shadow puppetry reflect subjective mood of characters better by art application, shadow figures, and coordination of lights. The representative works include puppetry such as “The Monkey King Thrice Beats the White Bone Demon”, “Nezha Encounters the Tau”, “Free Imagination of Spring”, and “The Little Match Girl”, as well as shadow show “Antelope Flying across”. These performances have achieved proud performance in specific historical period for they have original and unique forms of expression, themes and contents.
Shanghai Puppet Troupe often visits various countries and areas to give commercial performances and joint-created performances and participate in puppet competitions. It is not only praised highly for its skills, but also regarded as a troupe with good reputation in puppet field. Shanghai Puppet Troupe is one of the founding troupes of UNIMA China.
